Baby sleep: Tips for newborns

Getting a newborn to sleep can definitely be a challenge, but with some tips and a little patience, you can help create a calm environment for them. Here are some tips for encouraging better sleep for your little one:

  1. Establish a Routine: While newborns can’t follow a strict schedule right away, starting to create a bedtime routine can help them recognize when it’s time to sleep. Simple activities like a warm bath, feeding, or gentle rocking can signal it’s time to wind down.
  2. Create a Calm Sleep Environment: Make sure the room is quiet, dimly lit, and at a comfortable temperature (ideally 68–72°F). Some babies find white noise helpful, so a white noise machine or a fan might soothe them.
  3. Swaddle or Sleep Sack: Newborns feel more secure when wrapped snugly in a swaddle or sleep sack, as it mimics the cozy feeling of the womb. Just make sure they’re not too tight to allow for safe movement.
  4. Feed Before Bed: Newborns usually sleep best when they’re full, so a good feeding before bed can help them settle down for a longer stretch of sleep.
  5. Night vs. Day: Help your baby differentiate between night and day by keeping daytime naps bright and active, and nighttime quiet and dark. This can help them start to recognize nighttime as sleep time.
  6. Safe Sleep Practices: Always place your baby on their back to sleep, on a firm mattress with no loose bedding, pillows, or stuffed animals. This reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
  7. Patience and Flexibility: Newborns often wake every few hours to feed or for comfort, so try to be flexible and patient. It’s normal for babies to have irregular sleep patterns at first.
